Florida Voters To Decide Ban on Same Sex Marriage in '08

The Simpsons tackled the gay marriage debate now it looks like Florida voters will get their turn. Yesterday, the Florida Supreme Court allowed a state constitutional ban on same sex marriage to go on the 2008 ballot. Florida is one of 40 states with existing same sex marriage laws, so the new proposal will be an amendment. According to the Sun-Sentinel the proposal seeks to define marriage as the union of one man and one woman, but it also solidifies the provision in the state constitution and bars legal recognition for anything "treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof." Republicans who have already contributed a large sum of money to this campaign are hoping this measure will get more social conservatives to the polls in '08.
