Wilma Update - Possible Category 2

Rick Knabb just provided an update from the National Hurricane Center and the latest reports point to a possible Category 1 or 2 storm hitting Florida. Wilma sat over Cancun for 24 hours, but did not push as far inland as expected. Essentially this means the storm is pushing back out to sea as a category three storm. As the storm pushes towards Florida it will likely find favorable waters in the Gulf of Mexico and retain its strength, but the westerly winds will hopefully weaken Wilma before making landfall.

What is the impact of storms surges? The forecast will likely be refined, but there could be storm surges of 10-13 feet depending on where the eye hits. Knabb told reporters, "storm surge could have the greatest impact across the western coast and in the Keys."

All Broward county schools are closed on Monday and a decision about Tuesday will be made by 5 P.M. this evening.
