Versace Murder Mansion Turned into Club
The Ocean Drive mansion where Gianni Versace was killed in 1997 opens this weekend as a private membership club and hotel. Andrew Cunanan shot the über-designer twice in the back of the head as Versace was unlocking the gates on the mansion's front steps. Ever since, the steps of the house at 1116 Ocean Dr. have become a favorite photo spot for tourists. Nothing says vacation fun-in-the-sun like a morbid Kodak moment.
The 19,000-square-foot Casa Casuarina, which Versace purchased in 1990, features 12 bedrooms, 13 bathrooms and an observatory. The former hangout for stars like Madonna, Sting and Elton John was sold in 2000 to investors for $19 million , well below the estimated $30 million Versace spent transforming his palace. Care to join? Members shell out a $40,000 one-time fee and $3,600 annually.
